Teopy’s Story On September 20, 1932 the world was blessed with the birth of Teopista Calipes, daughter of Pedro & Venancia Anaviso in Bohol Philippines. On the morning of June 18, 2020, her spirit departed this life to watch over us in heaven. Teopy & Narciso met through her brother-in-law, Lucio. On their first date, her family of 10 accompanied them to the movies. In the Philippines, her family was considered wealthy because they owned their own restaurant. She couldn’t wait to start a life with our dad in America, but soon found out that living here came with a price. Mom worked as a teacher’s aide, nurses aide and a laundress in Vallejo to help support her family. They married on August 27, 1959, and soon started a family. Teopy loved spending time with her family and took care of all of her nine grandchildren under one roof. She told stories of how she & her siblings walked for miles through the rice fields to get to school and how her pet monkey died because it liked to eat fire. She was very superstitious. She made sure you never went to sleep with wet hair or you’d wake up blind. Don’t ever walk around the house without slippers or you surely would get sick. She did have another superstition…which will remain a family secret. We’re gonna miss her healing massages. If anyone in her family coughed or ached in any way, she would rub Vicks Vaporub all over them, and they would fall asleep and actually feel better the next day. It didn’t matter what time of the day, she was never too tired to take care of us. Even when she was in a wheelchair, she would still try to cook for us. Her favorite food was Top Ramen, fish and crab. You didn’t have to ask her twice if she wanted some. As far as desserts—her face lit up when you offered her sweets, especially if it was Karioka. She loved coffee with creamer and would sneak in a little whiskey from the pantry every so often. She had the softest skin. When we asked her what she used, she said “Vaseline”. No wonder her cheeks were always shiny. We’re gonna miss her beautiful smile, infectious laugh, her loud sneeze that shook the house, and especially her hugs and kisses and the way she held our hand and rubbed her thumb over ours. We’ll miss waking up every morning—just being able to see her and hear her voice made our day. We pray the Rosary for you Mom, so you can be with Dad in Heaven. Give him a kiss and hug from all of us. Please come and visit us. We won’t be afraid. In fact, we will live each day looking for signs that you’re still here with us. We find peace knowing that you and Dad are both watching over us. We love you so much & miss you already... 6/30/20 5-7 pm Private Viewing (Immediate Family only) 7:30 pm Vigil at Our House: 7/1/20 12 pm Mass and Funeral (Limited to Guest List Only) 3 pm Funeral Reception: While we want to celebrate the life of Teopista Calipes, we encourage everyone to wear a mask and practice safe distancing according to COVID guidelines. If you have your own mask, please bring it with you.We will understand if you are not able to take part in this celebration of life. If you are able to attend, hand sanitizer will be at the front door for the reception following the funeral at our house, and we may take temperatures before you come in.We encourage families to sit 6 feet away from others of a different household.We will also have a taco stand and tables outside to stay within the guidelines.We would love to have everyone who was a part of Teopista’s life at this celebration, but we also want to make sure everyone remains healthy and safe!
