In Loving Memory of Marilyn Hinton September 3, 1932 – May 13, 2025 Marilyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend. She passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025, surrounded by family. She was 92. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 38 years Jerry Hinton, daughters Vana Beckenhauer (pre-deceased), Kathryn Foley, Carol Rowan (Raymond), grandchildren Nicole Demmon (Byron), Justin Foley (Kristen), Rachel Beckenhauer, Amanda Beckenhauer (Joaquin) and Danielle Demmon (Geoff), and 7 great-grandchildren. Marilyn is the daughter of Gilmore and Leona Van Olst born on September 3, 1932, in Huron, South Dakota. In 1941 the Van Olst family relocated to Vallejo, California, where her father began teaching science at Franklin Junior High School. It was there that Marilyn’s deep connection to the Vallejo community began, a connection that would grow and flourish throughout her life. A bright and accomplished student, Marilyn attended Carquinez Elementary and Franklin Junior High School, where she was active in student government and first met her future husband, Jerry Hinton. She continued her education at Vallejo Senior High School, where she was elected class president, and later attended Armstrong Business College. Marilyn began her professional career in 1953, serving as secretary to Deputy Superintendent George Chaffey at the Vallejo School District. In 1955, she married Jack Renfro and resigned from her career to raise their three daughters: Vana, Kathy, and Carol. She volunteered at Highland Elementary, Franklin Junior High School, and Vallejo Senior High School PTAs where she was recognized for her outstanding contributions and awarded an Honorary PTA Life Membership. Marilyn volunteered as a Camp Fire Girls leader, recognized with a District Camp Fire Award for her leadership and dedication. She was also very active in Vallejo’s First Presbyterian Church for many years where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served on committees. In 1973 Marilyn went back to work for Vallejo Unified School District, by the time she retired she had been promoted to Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. On July 20, 1985 Jerry attended his first class reunion and reestablished a relationship with Marilyn (both Jerry and Marilyn were divorced at the time). When Jerry had to return to Vallejo for his mothers funeral, much to his surprise Marilyn was in attendance. Jerry later asked her on a date, to which she accepted and that started a relationship that lasted until May 13, 2025. Marilyn and Jerry did quite a bit of traveling together over the years, much of which was for Jerry’s senior softball tournaments. Marilyn stayed actively involved in the lives of her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren throughout her life. She was a guiding light and constant source of support to her family. Marilyn was also a long-standing and dedicated member of P.E.O. Chapter KL in Vallejo, a philanthropic women’s organization supporting women’s education, where she served as chapter president. Marilyn and Jerry were married August 15, 1987 which Jerry says was his lucky day when Marilyn allowed him to come back into her life. Jerry and Marilyn shared 38 years of “marital bliss.” Jerry has always said she was a beautiful person inside and out !!!
